Here is a collection of some samples of my work. I've broken it down into 2 catagories, Music and Theatre.
Music
The music samples cover several years, and a pretty wide range of styles. These are some examples of recordings I've produced. Some of them were recorded live to 2 track, and others were full blown multi-track sessions recorded to analog 24 track machines, or Pro Tools. These samples are pretty short to keep the download time reasonable. If you'd like to hear more, please feel free to email me.
Theatre
The Theatre samples are from Bloody Poetry by Howard Brenton. The play centers around the summer Lord Byron met Percy and Mary Shelly in Geneva, and the years that follow. During that summer, they envisioned and tried to live a utopian life. Unfortunately, as most often happens, their actions had consequences. Over the course of the play, the audience sees them go from hopefull, carefree friends, to tragic enemies. Because the set would not be able to change due to the limits of the space, Sound and Lights were left with much of the responsibility for conveying changes in location, and passage of time. As Sound Designer, I wanted to not only convey these necessary scenic elements, but also the underlying emotions and tensions the characters were going through. To do this, I paralleled their emotional journey with the sound design by taking it from realistic and comforting to distorted and unnerving. - The Carriage cue from the opening of the show. At this point, the characters are at ease with each other, and it's very important that the audience realize that the scene takes place in a moving carriage as there was no set piece to give them that information. This cue was started fairly loud as the actors entered, and then dipped down just before the actors started their dialogue.
- The first lakeside cue. Lake Geneva plays an important role in the play. This cue also takes place towards the beginning of the play where the characters are hopefull and relaxed.
- This cue takes place in the second act as the characters relationships and lives are falling apart. This is a cue that underscores a scene where Byron takes Shelly to visit an asylum in Venice. The sound is evocative of the boat ride they take to get to the asylum to help clue the audience in to the setting of the scene, but also inculdes a number of unnerving elements to help them follow the characters emotional states.
- Finally, we're at the climax of the play when Percy Shelly takes a small boat out onto Lake Geneva as a storm brews up. It's this storm, and his own lack of seamanship that kills him. As the play progressed there were a series of scenes on the lake, and I used the progression of lake sounds to parallel the characters emotional state. Here at the end, when things are at their worst, the lake sounds rise up with a wide range of unnerving and unpleasant components.
